Site Terminology
Go to top of page
You will see the following terms throughout the site, so we've prepared a quick help guide as to their meanings
- Closed Height: This is the length of the ladder when it is closed up. We use the closed height when describing a ladder product. E.g. a 2.5m Triple ladder, is 3 sections of 2.5m.
- Open Height: This is the length of the ladder correctly opened to the maximum.
- Duty rating: E.g. 150kg: This refers to the maximum permissible load or weight to be used on the ladder. I.e. the person and tools climbing the ladder cannot weigh more than this duty rating.
- Usage: E.g. Domestic or Trade or Industrial. If you are buying a ladder for use at home, then domestic is the right grade. If you are buying for a company or will use the ladder extensively a domestic ladder is not sufficient.
- Sections: Extension ladders usually come in more than one section. A double will obviously have 2 sections and a triple, 3 sections.

3 material types, aluminium, timber and glass fibre
- Aluminium: Most popular, easy to store, will not rust, lightweight & portable
- Timber: Traditionally used in a manufacturing environment, as an alternative to glass fibre.
- Glass fibre: Used to be prohibitively expensive, bought by electricians or those working in a spark risk environment
- Double or Triple extension ladders?: A double may be cheaper, but a triple will be easier to store and you can use the individual extension pieces within the house for some jobs, whilst be able to get to the gutters once or twice a year.
- Storing ladders: Don't leave them outside, or your local thief will use them to access your upstairs windows!! Store them securely inside a garage using wall hooks.
